The Society of Swedish Engineers awards 2019 Scholarship

02 March 2020

The Society of Swedish Engineers in Great Britain has awarded Miss Emilie Torneús and Miss Matilda Schulz the 2019 scholarship for their Masters´ Degrees´ studies at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and Loughborough University respectively. The scholarships objective is to promote a better understanding of British technical and industrial conditions amongst Swedish engineers. To secure this object it provides opportunities for young Swedish engineers to visit and study in the United Kingdom.

Emelie is studying for a Masters´ Degree in Nanotechnology at the University of Chalmers. As part of the scholarship program she will spend the spring semester 2020 furthering her education at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Nanotechnology has applications within many different fields from electronics to biosystems. On the nanoscale molecules and atoms are in focus and research often takes place on the borders between physics, chemistry, and biology.

Matilda is studying for a Masters´ Degree in Industrial Design Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. As part of the scholarship program she will spent the spring semester 2020 furthering her education at Loughborough University. Her masters places a strong focus on ensuring efficient product development based on industry demand commercially successful products, as well as societal demands for a transition towards a more sustainable society. The students work closely with users and learn how to involve them in the design process. They also learn different tools and methods to use during the process in order to present a final solution with balancing demands from users, industry, society and the environment.

The Society of Swedish Engineers in Great Britain was founded in 1924. The Society was born out of a wish to offer hospitality to the large contingent of Swedish engineers who were attending the World Power Conference in 1924. There was already a considerable number of Swedish engineers working in Great Britain and many felt that it was time, if not overdue, to establish a forum for Swedish engineers. Since then the Societies´ main activity is to the promotion of a better understanding of British technical and industrial conditions amongst Swedish engineers. To secure this objective it is proposed to afford opportunities for young Swedish engineers to visit the United Kingdom and study at first hand British engineering enterprise, and industrial works and institutions.

Applications are now open for 2020 scholarship. The application deadline is 17 April 2020. For more information please contact chairman@swedishengineers.org.uk
