In Conversation with Mike Freer MP, UK Minister for Exports

As UK and international businesses opened up again following a challenging year, opportunities for UK trade relations and new investments have now resumed in a new international scenario. Join us for a Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce in the UK online event, with Mike Freer MP, Minister for Exports, in conversation with Valentina Romei, Economics Reporter at the Financial Times.

The UK Minister for Exports will be discussing the opportunities for UK exporters and the potential for foreign companies to invest in the UK. Mike Freer will also share insights on the commercial priorities of the UK Government and the Department for International Trade (DIT) focusing on the importance of international trade and investment post Covid-19.

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session. Guests are invited to submit their questions prior to the live discussion by sending them by 10 January to jcuppone@italchamind.org.uk.

The event will be held on Zoom under Chatham House rule.

About the speakers

Mike Freer was appointed Minister for Exports and Minister for Equalities in September 2021. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Finchley and Golders Green in May 2010. Mike was Assistant Government Whip between June 2017 and July 2018. He was also Lord Commissioner of the Treasury from July 2018 to December 2019 and served as Comptroller of HM Household from December 2019 to September 2021.

The Minister for Export’s responsibilities include:

  • export promotion across all sectors
  • UK Export Finance (UKEF)
  • the Trade Envoy programme
  • world events, including Dubai Expo 2021

He also supports the Secretary of State with:

  • delivering an Export Strategy to boost exports across the UK
  • supporting small and medium sized businesses to export
  • trade missions and trade shows
  • the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) contribution to the GREAT campaign
  • investment policy in the House of Commons

Valentina Romei is an Economics reporter at the Financial Times. She is the lead reporter on UK data and writes news and analysis pieces on the European and global economies. Before her current role, she worked on the FT editorial statistics desk and in academia.
